About UNMU

The Uganda Nurses and Midwives Union, UNMU was established and registered in 2003 to represent the nurses and midwives in Uganda. It is both a professional body as well as a labor organization. As a professional organization, UNMU focuses on ensuring that the profession is practiced at the highest possible standard. As a labor organization, UNMU spearheads efforts geared toward improving the socio-economic welfare of nurses and midwives in the country as a whole. The activities and the functions of UNMU are implemented in accordance with its constitution.

Objectives Of UNMU

  • To promote and maintain a high standard of Nursing and Midwifery in Uganda.
  • To bargain, lobby and negotiate for better terms and conditions of service for its members.
  • To promote unity and solidarity among members.
  • To establish and maintain mutual understanding between nurses,Midwives and their employers.
  • To safeguard the social and economic welfare of members.
  • To cooperate and network with other organizations.
  • To ensure that the ethical code of conduct is observed by nurses and midwives.
  • To serve as the authoritative voice for nurses and midwives in Uganda.
  • To provide advice to government and other stakeholders on all issues affecting nursing, midwifery and public health.
  • To purchase, lease, take on hire, exchange properties, land or effects, borrow, raise funds, invest monies, and receive gifts, which serve to expedite the interest of UNMU and its members.
  • To carry out such other lawful actions as may be incidental or conducive to the attainment of the objectives of UNMU.
